This piece takes its starting point from a lyric in Yugen Blakrok’s song, “Earthlinguist”: “girl spawn from a deity / apple from the tree to the core.” The first piece made after the passing of my mother, the work considers the relationship between earthly and divine forms.

Two figures evoke Madonna and child, their repeated curves and carved surfaces creating a rhythm between separation and continuation. They are physically separate but connected by the same Source Code, my recurring pattern etched into the clay. The pattern moves across their bodies as available information that is transmitted despite meaning, translation or understanding. Rivers through the Source Code carry life force, while pink edges represent flesh.

Pentacles locate the work in the material, while hand-stitched mohair extends as soft antennae, rendering the structures receptive beyond the bodies that gesture towards one another.

The girl checks the mic with “a-one-two” before she looks up towards the deity pouring into her. She sees the truth: a deity begets another deity.
